I was reminded again of an Old Testament example of living righteously and unto the Lord under a secular, ungodly civil authority. We have the example of Daniel, but also of Joseph. Joseph’s identity wasn’t tied to his “coat of many colors” or to his Jewishness, but to the Lord. As he was transported to the court of Potiphar, the pharaoh of Egypt, Joseph submitted to his condition and became the most favored of Potiphar’s attendants, rising in authority. Even after being wrongly accused by Potiphar’s wife and sentenced to prison, he did not give in to despair and anger at his loss of freedom, but continued serving the Lord in the hostile environment, eventually rising again to prominence in Pharoah’s regime. Now, we know the end of the story, but Joseph didn’t. He was faithful, obeying the Lord rather than men, and resting in the Lord’s providence for His life. We also don’t know the outcome of any of the trials the Lord brings our way, but we do know Him. Is He enough for us?
